And the Services March On....

A web2.0 feature that has been growing rapidly is file storage and sharing for collaboration. While many of these sites exist, there's always the problem of allotted space. A new site has just started that offers you an entire gigabyte of file space:
GigaSize. I've found that using these sites for collaborative work is far easier than e-mail. Check it out!

Reuse, Recycle

Lifehacker posts a list of resources for reusable media -- images licensed under Creative Commons, stock photos, film, and songs. (And that's where I got the cool photo on the left.)

Replicator to the Rescue

While Replicator sounds like the name of a super villan, it's really more like a super hero! It's a freeware download that will automatically back up your files or folders from one drive to another. Replicator even allows you to set a schedule to automatically create back ups. Now I have no excuse for not backing up my files.

Who's Got The Time?

I don't know about you, but I panic every semester when we must fill out those system surveys that require us to account for how many hours we spend in teaching, advising, preparing for classes, etc. Moreover, I'm always curious whether I really do spend over 70 hours per week on work-related projects.

In my quest for truth and reality, I have come across two potentially excellent time trackers. The first (which I am currently using)is called Rachota. This program is tiny and resides on your desktop. You simply add the task you want to track and click "work." When you have finished, you click "done," and the program automatically records the time. The second program, Tick is web-based. It also allows you to track your time on specific projects. Because it resides on the web, you can access your time records anytime.

Looking for Fonts?

For a variety of reasons, the fonts that come preinstalled with MS Office never seem to have the flair or appeal that I want for many of my documents. And, in fact, after looking through them for hours at a time, they all look pretty much the same. That's when I turn to dafont.com for help. It's a site that offers free fonts for use, most of which are well far better for logos, titles, and decorative text than WordArt.

Add A Little Color to Your Life

Lockergnome is a nifty site that has a variety of free tools to browze and try out. One that I tried is Folder Marker (under System Utilities, Shell Tools.) Folder Marker allows you to mark folders (with color) by priority (high, normal, low), level of project completeness (done, half-done, planned) and by type of information stored in them (work, important, temp and private files). Simply right-click on the folder, select a color-coded icon and it will be assigned to the folder at once.

Put a Little Map in Your Site...

Wikimapia, via Lifehacker, has a tip for adding a Google map to your web site. Seems pretty slick and useful. The following is my haphazard attempt to map SRU into the blog. Maybe the concept needs a little work, or maybe I need a little help. Take a look at the Eiffel Tower for a better example. Category: Web_
